As I have travelled between representational, documentary illustration and abstract performance art, my creative path has led me on many adventures. My current project is to illustrate and document the people and places of Portland. Through art, I have found a daily practice that enables me to quietly observe my surroundings and capture moments without a camera. This form of drawing en plein air has guided me for a number of years, since my travels in Asia and Central America. To create a window or vision of a familiar place that is instantly recognizable to a stranger is an amazing thing. Because I desire to link my artworks intimately with the community, I have taken on this homework assignment to draw as much of the real life of Portland as I can. As visual inspiration for my current series, I am indebted to the visions of Albrecht Durer and his timeless woodcuts, etchings, and engravings. My next creative leap will certainly be towards these traditional printmaking techniques. Until I find that elusive French master, find me at a nearby Stumptown café drawing in my sketchbook.
Designer Dani Paquin founded Agapantha jewelry on a dusty road somewhere in the United States sometime in 2004. She wishes she could be more specific, but she was out touring the country with her guitar and she just can’t be sure. Back in Brooklyn, between tours she worked assembling jewelry for other designers until the moment came when knew she had to bring her own designs to life. And so Agapantha was born and an important artistic shift was made. No longer would she tour the world with her music, but instead, with trays filled with her hand-made semi-precious and repurposed vintage jewelry. Fast forward to the present…Agapantha is carried in dozens of boutiques nationwide and is growing by the minute. Oprah, Lucky, Daily Candy and many more have hopped on board. Agapantha has grown to include a line of one-of-a-kind vintage pieces and fine jewelry. All of the jewelry is still lovingly made by hand. Oh, and the name Agapantha you ask? It was the first flower Dani’s mom and grandma taught her how to say. She pays homage to them and all the important women in her life by naming each collection after someone special. All you have to do is put a piece on, and whether it’s named after you or not, you’ll feel special too!
Their mission is simple: “Turning useless into useful.” Alchemy is the medieval science of turning lead into gold. More generally, it means magically turning something of lesser value into something of greater value. For Alechemy Goods, the value isn’t economical so much as ecological. They look for materials that are normally discarded that might have value with a little bit of imagination and some hard work. Every Alchemy Goods bag or accessory purchased represents one less part of our world destroyed. That’s why all their products should have the highest possible recycled content, but also be superbly functional and aesthetically pleasing. The logo intentionally looks like the periodic table. The number in the upper right hand corner represents the percent (by weight) of recycled material in the product you purchased. This Seattle based company is making some very useful things indeed.
Designer Kiki Parry has been crafting memorable cards since she could fold paper. Now armed with a PowerBook, array of beautiful recycled content cardstock, and enough cutting devices to narrowly avoid a bloody mess, the sky’s the limit. Alternate Greetings combines a great looking card with the stuff you want to say to your friends – but usually can’t find on the shelves. The look is minimal type, elegant and cute, sometimes feminine, sometimes modern, often retro (30’s clip art is a favorite subject of inspiration). Kiki loves sweet Jersey corn, music, new art supplies, and cats but not things with cats on them, especially not those damn nylon flags people hang outside their house for all occasions. She hates those, and unreasonably slow drivers, and factory farming.
Amelia is a line of clothing inspired by special objects and the memories they evoke. A bird’s nest. A picnic blanket. A well worn button. A snapshot. Amelia’s simple, feminine, and classically inspired clothes are the uniform of evenings on front porches sipping sweet tea and cocktails, riding bicycles down quiet roads, snacking on homemade pies, having new adventures and reveling in favorite stories. Everything is designed and produced in charming Portland, Oregon. Always mindful of using socially and environmentally responsible methods and fabrics, Amelia clothing is the kind of little luxury you can feel good about purchasing, wearing, and making memories in.
Anne Kimball studied fashion design at the California College of the Arts in Oakland. She began sewing her own clothes in graduate school, and soon began selling to friends. The line began with a small pamphlet of hand-sewn styles in the spring of 2007. The fabrics are mostly vintage or surplus, with the recent arrival of some new eco fabrics. The prints and colors are lush and eccentric. The styles are vintage-inspired yet modern and wearable. Handmade in small batches in San Francisco, CA.
Inspired by the Fifties, the collection emphasizes femininity and a taste for retro-style. Often snug, cozy, and displaying classic designs of the era, the clothes attract those with a passion for Rock and Roll as well as ladies looking for originality with a throw-back flair. With high standards in their production ethics and darling designs to boot– we’re thrilled to bring Annie 50 to our floor. Founded in Montreal, Canada on Valentine’s Day of 2005 by it’s two lovely owners Annie & Amelie.
Brought to life right here at Radish Underground by co-owner Celestial Sipes, Aster Park uses reclaimed fabric (the ultimate in ‘green’ material) and is handmade right here in Portland. AP has an affinity for the versatile and always has at least one reversible garment a season. Because the fabric used is reclaimed, there is only so much of a particular color or pattern, so each design is unique and totally rad (or Rad-ish, if you will).
Bella & Loki
Bella & Loki is a fresh line of jewelry created by Portland native, Brook Fullwiler. It all began when I needed new jewelry and didn’t have any funds, so constructed new pieces with old jewelry and objects I already had. Plus I loved that I was recycling! Thus began the treasure hunting. Each piece comes from a formerly used piece of metal, chain, charm, etc. that I have collected. As well, natural objects such as bones, crystals, sharks’ teeth, etc. are tossed in for a sweet mixture. All pieces are at least 75% recycled content, often vintage, and always one-of-a-kind. Old and discarded becomes fun, new, interesting, and beautiful.
Betsy Cross is a Virginia native who moved to Portland in 2006 to join in the PDX theatre scene after nearly a decade performing, directing, and teaching throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. She attended programs at Virginia Tech, Harvard, and Dell’ Arte International where she received an MFA in Physical and Ensemble-based theatre. While theatre continues to be an important part of her life, her fascination with ornamentation and calloused hands led her to design jewelry under the moniker, betsy & iya—the name, an homage to her big sis’ and their dynamic relationship. When she was younger, she couldn’t pronounce “Ashlyn,” so she settled for “iya” and it stuck. Iya lives across the country but her spirit remains a vital part of the company’s mission. betsy & iya jewelry is sold throughout the world (especially to Australians–they eat it up!) and in indie boutiques all across the US. Apart from being a full-time designer, Betsy plays music in a rowdy all-girl band, paints for fancy universities, keeps a blog showcasing her crazy outfits, photography and life, and lovingly stares at her shiny new husband. She is flipping-out excited and honored to be a featured designer amid such Radish Underground buzzing talent.

Noteworthy is the ingenious combination of materials such as knittings, microfleece, denim and corduroy. One sees more than merely zippers, hoods and elegant lines, but the very definition of the Bodybag aesthetic. The elements with which each woman can express a truly unique style. A fantastic new addition to the Radish family, this Canadian line is manufactured completely in Montreal from fabrics gathered all over the world.

DUST
www . dustcantkillme . com
Dust is a very small clothing line based in Portland, ORE. Every garment is a one of a kind piece. Strange closures, unfinished edges, mismatching buttons and uneven dyes are part of what make each piece special, like an old Hungarian woman making stuff in her wobbly old cottage, accidentally making a sweater uneven on one side or repairing a hole with different colored thread. Interesting is the goal, not perfection.

fiveleft leather goods marry sleek modernism with rugged saddlery tradition. Owner lincoln heller brings these contrary esthetics together by hammering found objects into leather and dying it to produce fiveleft’s stunning colour pallet. To pay for art school lincoln worked in an Alaskan logging camp, where he began working with leather by making tool pouches from discarded boots. Upon returning to Vancouver B.C. he began building custom bags for men based on one of his own creations. Now, lincoln has developed fiveleft leather into a full line of accessories for men and women. fiveleft uses only vegetable tanned leather, thread, and functional hardware that stand the test of time. The result is a durable product made with less waste. The leather used is derived from an ancient tanning process of soaking cowhides in a ‘vegetable matter soup.’ This process uses very little toxic chemicals and leaves the leather rigid and ready to be tooled. From conception to production, their bags limit waste by using shapes and sizes that maximize hide use. fiveleft bags use very few parts, some as little as four pieces of leather.
frawn by Frances Orona
Growing up in Seattle Washington, I spent a great deal of time in the outdoors. Even today I continue to enjoy hiking, camping and backpacking and I have the utmost respect for the beauty of the northwest. I love to travel and discover new places and textures. I photograph these things and use the images to create some of the earrings in this line. Many of the patterns are from furniture and other interior elements of my grandmother’s home. These earrings are inspired by the things that I love: nature, Portland, traveling and my grandmother. I chose to use a warm Cherry, 3/32″ thick wood with a natural oil finish to give the earrings a raw look and feel. The image is laser cut onto the wood and the burn depth of the laser creates the darkness of the image.
An adorable local designer, Alberta May Poon makes one-of-a-kind, handmade jewelry and accessories. Each heart-theme piece is made with love, and sure to brighten your day (or your earlobes).

Beautiful jewelry founded in sterling silver and vintage elements (like her stunning Czech glass bead rings), Seattle based designer Lyndsay Brown loves to take something from the past and create something new. While in school, Lyndsay discovered that she loved working with metal, particularly silver. Once she had the basics, her style developed from experimentation and exploring all the possibilities she could working with the metal. Taking inspiration from what became her life long hobby, with the encouragement of family and friends, she created idle hands designs in 2006. Her designs are inspired primarily from music and all things spooky. And while she clearly she fancies the darkness, there is a lighter side to her creations as well that can be seen in the fine detail work, elegant style, and beautifully colored beads.

Growing up in the creative environment of Portland, Oregon, Jené DeSpain began shaping her sense of style as a young girl. The daughter of a craftsman and an artist, her understanding of design and construction was strongly encouraged. Working next to her father in his woodshop honed her love for tools, while sketching with her mother developed her visual aesthetic. Jené moved to NYC in 1997 to enrich her artistic, urban lifestyle and worked many years as a fashion photographer, deepening her admiration for the many fine professionals and artists who work in the fashion industry. Drawn to a number of mediums to express her interest in raw material, tangible artifact, and multifaceted design, she eventually discovered a new satisfaction in jewelry design. Completely self-taught, Jené DeSpain launched her first jewelry collection in the fall of 2005. Its immediate success led to a fast-growing, loyal clientele, and her jewelry is now carried by fine retailers in multiple cities worldwide. Working in her Brooklyn studio, Jené personally crafts each piece of jewelry by hand with a dedication to quality from materials made entirely within the United States. With each collection, Jené broadens her exploration of design and her devotion to creating striking pieces of jewelry outside the confines of momentary trends. Cultivating a constantly evolving community of fellow designers, artists, musicians, stylists, and patrons of her work, is Jené’s greatest source of inspiration. Her collaboration with the expanse of talent in NYC and beyond connects Jené to the pulse of fashion while she creates bold, distinct jewelry for those who respond to innovative design. This love of culture is revealed in each piece of her jewelry and remains at the heart of her brand.
The Prairies is in her heart but Montreal is where it is at for Jennifer Glasgow. With a Bachelor of fine Arts under her belt she moved to Montreal with no intention of producing performance art. Having worked as a welder, video tech, window dresser and seamstress she came to Quebec with an open slate and nothing holding her back. She soon found herself creating extraordinary costumes for drag queens, dancers and performance artists alike. In 1998, Jennifer traveled to the Banff School of Art, learning the precise art of ballet, opera and theatre headdresses. With a new bag of tricks under her hat, she was sought after by the Cirque du Soleil where she helped create and recreate some of the finest hats seen on stage. Her adventure under the Big Top prompted her to venture off on her own with great technical and creative experience. In 2003, she and two friends opened Local 23, community based store in the burgeoning artistic area of The Mile End in Montreal, Quebec. Due to a great demand for unique, Montreal based designer clothing, a second boutique, General 54 was born. A second store only a block away from the first, yet bursting at the seams with Glasgow’s own collections and those of over 40 different Canadian designers! Her original works have been highlighted in Elle Canada, Lou Lou magazine and many Montreal reviews such as Nightlife, The Mirror, The Hour and Le Voir. Never for lack of inspiration, Jennifer continues to reach out to the women of the Prairies, the mountains, the peaks and valleys by producing clothing with heart and soul. She could fix your car, play you a tune or weld your gate but fashion has found a creative and inspired designer with staying power. The fashion industry has been inundated with fresh ideas. The landscape is taking on new dimensions of ethical and thoughtful design. Jennifer Glasgow believes the influx of designers who are like minded will recreate the industry one garment at a time. Glasgow designs are made with the help of many different artists and seamstresses in the Mile End district of Montreal. Emphasis is placed on creating high quality work and design. Moving towards new frontiers, Jennifer has placed an emphasis on sourcing and using natural and organic textiles. All fabrics are sourced in Montreal and great emphasis is placed on sourcing high quality textiles. All patterns are unique, original designs by Jennifer Glasgow. The gradation and fit perfection take place in house.

A perfectly worn-in sweater you reach for time and time again was hard to come by before Qi launched in 2002. At first, our in-house design team worked to transform traditional knitwear by traveling worldwide—from the arid cliffs of Italy to Inner Mongolia—to find the most luxurious and coveted cashmere available. By mixing these top-of-the-line materials with innovative designs, Qi was able to create high-quality and modern knitwear. With our roots firmly planted in the knitwear sector, we continued to expand and proceeded to fill our loyal followers’ wardrobes with Qi. From our fashion-forward ready-to-wear collections to our cozy loungewear, Qi has grown substantially—but has never wavered in its commitment to bringing style, comfort, and quality to our customers. Qi has attracted a strong celebrity following and has graced the pages of various publications and been featured on several hit television shows. While Qi embraces life’s self-indulgent pleasures—the confidence one gets from looking good, the feel of soft cashmere against your skin, the comfort the perfect pair of pajamas brings after a long day—we never overlook our social responsibility. Qi believes in not only living good, but doing good. Our use of cashmere promotes environmental health by using cashmere, a renewable resource that ensures profitability for farmers, in an efficient and eco-friendly way. While reducing our carbon hoofprint, we also lend our support to non-profit organizations, such as the Advocates For the Children of New York and the National Wildlife Federation, in their efforts to create a better world. Like yarn that has been carefully knit into a sweater, Qi has worked to build a socially conscious brand that offers superior quality and original designs. We promise you that you’ll look good, feel good, and do good when you wear Qi. Embrace yourself in the goodness…
The entire line is hand-made in Los Angeles with signature details like deconstructed seams, raw hems that give the pieces a broken-in, yet well-crafted look. Loosely translated this means: “I’ve warn this everyday because it’s the most comfortable thing I own and still looks like a million bucks”. This amazing company is taking high quality, conscious couture to a new level. Consider us hooked.
Reif is a Portland, OR based fashion haus with its hands in the past, mind in the present, and eyes on the future. Designer Lindsey Reif believes that as the world around us continues to grow and change, so too must our clothing. Reif draws inspiration from the past to create pieces for the future. Taking classic cuts and silhouettes and translating them into modern pieces ready to move forward with the wearer. Garments that will stand the test of time and spend more time on shoulders and hips than in closets. Their choice of modern and sustainable fabrics molds a look that is both fashion forward and socially progressive. Their motto is the German expression, “die Zeit is reif”, which means “the time is ripe”. The modern consumer is consistently flooded with the uninspired and mass produced. Reif stands against this trend and recognizes that it’s time to rise above the ordinary and look to the future. The time is ripe, die Zeit ist REIF.

A Material Scientist by trade, Jaclyn finds inspiration for her work in natural materials patterns: metal grain lines under the microscope, winter-frost on the window, or sea-plants on the ocean floor. Seafoam Glass earrings are inspred by the patterns of growth, texture, and color specifically found in sea plants and organisms. The pendants are hand cut, patterned, and fused from glass supply manufactured locally at Bullseye Glass in Portland, OR. The ear hooks are made of surgical steel with a silver coating, and hand-adapted to each pair of glass earrings. Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jaclyn now lives and works in Portland, OR creating sculpture and jewelry in glass, paint, resin, and ink and utilizing recycled materials in her processing wherever possible.

sarahhoo
sarahhoo is inspired by the beauty of nature, the mechanism of industry and life’s quirks. The work incorporates crochet, found objects and vintage elements to make handmade toys, jewelry, and home accessories for women, men and children. Owner Sarah Hulin learned at an early age that she is happiest when her hands are creating. When she’s not crocheting she is building and animating stop-motion puppets, speaking expressively, or digging in the dirt. Her biggest fear is being misunderstood. Her greatest ambition is to learn to fly.
Second was founded in Montreal in 2000 by Éric Wazana. The company specializes in up-market jeans, including Second’s Yoga Jeans, named the best women’s jeans by a number of magazines (carried at Radish Underground!). Second is keen on keeping the lines within the local economy and encouraging support for local designers. It is known for the quality of its cuts and for its social conscience, reflected in its 100% Quebec production and its constant search for new ecological fibres to use in its clothing. The latest S(eco)nd collection is the natural extension of the company’s collective vision.
Jenny Greenup can find inspiration for her clothing line, SHE-SHE, in the most simple of moments. Walking on the streets on her current city, Portland, Oregon, her eye may be drawn to the way the sunlight parts the trees or how the bridges intersect across the Willamette River. These moments of inspiration, are combined with her lifetime love of nature and her strong connection to her family to create each unique SHE-SHE piece. Each design is a balance of soft and strong, accentuating the feminity of it’s wearer but also celebrating her confidence and strength. ”SHE-SHE is inspired by the events and people in my life,” Jenny says. “I want each piece to feel good, both to the touch and to the way you feel when you’re wearing it”.
Alisa Starr makes Snarky Cards: Brutally Honest Greeting Cards. She sells them in bars from a box that hangs beneath her boobs. They will crack you the f*&! up. She also, luckily, sells them in stores across the country. Most of the cards come from her own Vaginal experiences. And she also gets a lot of good suggestions from drunks in bar. Alisa is 31 years old, and lives in Portland, Oregon. She grew up in the Silicon Valley, in the height of the dot com boom; which is why she’s such a business goddess. She has always been Brutally Honest to strangers. Snarky Cards is her first writing gig.
Exquisite tayloring and sustainable fibers, Sharon Blair’s garments fit like a dream. A sophisticated, vintage touch to the design makes them a perfect for all of your fashion needs from the dress that takes you from work to dinner, to the jacket that helps you face the winter with style (year after year).
Suzabelle’s designs are innovative, feminine, classic, and designer Suzanne Jaberg was recently dubbed the “Seattle Coat Queen” by the Seattle Times. One of the few lines we support that are produced over seas, Suzabelle’s goal in production is to provide great living wages and work environments for women in smaller, less-develped countries. Their production manager visits the manufacturers weekly to ensure everything is running smoothly and that all aspects of development are socially responsible. They use natural fiber materials and dyes whenever possible and source their fabrics and labor within the same community. We simply love every single piece we can get our hot little hands on.
Born +raised in Seattle, Washington as the only daughter of a world famous oceanographer and a beautiful social butterfly who gave Emily her X-ray green eyes. These two magic creatures also gave Emily and her daredevil older brother and her gentle younger brother an island full of strawberries and sandcastles they called home each summer. It was there that Emily hid amongst the driftwood and cedar dreaming up her future feminist line of jewelry lovingly known as Sword+Fern. In an honest homage to northwest forests and mysterious passages, and sprung from the kindred arms of close cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, and ferry rides, Emily designed jewelry from a young age out of the seashells and string she collected after sunny peanut butter picnics on KVI beach. Upon moving to Portland, Oregon where she now is settled, Emily opened her retail /studio space, Sword+Fern on the Central Eastside’s up-and-coming shopping district after a year of designing residential landscapes in the Portland area. Emily’s current jewelry collection was created in the spirit of the beaches and forests she grew up amongst, using natural and found materials such as old car parts, recycled glass, leather, bone, driftwood, vintage chain, rusty metals and shell.
Each piece of jewelry is hand-made by Talia in her studio in Portland, Oregon.Talia’s designs reflect the beauty of the environment in which she creates them. Organic shapes inspire hammered silver work. By fusing pigmented glass to metal, her enamel pieces radiate the vivid colors of nature. Her designs are her own and each piece is unique. Talia Jewelry Design is run using sustainable practices. Most of her sterling silver and 14k gold fill wire comes from recycled metal. Talia purchases materials from local businesses as much as possible. She recycles her scrap metal and all her packaging is post consumer, recycled and reusable.
Known as “THUNDIES” on this side of the pond, Radish Underground is incredibly proud to be the only US distributer of these comfy, stylee undies for action folk of all ages. In 1995 a couple of chicks were frustrated by an undie market which either had them squirming all day in wee lace numbers or flopping about in sexless granny bloomers. In a mix of desperation and inspiration, they created their ideal undie – a delicious mix of 92% cotton and 8% lycra, cut for comfort and style without a shred of elastic, handprinted in fab original wood-cut designs. From that moment, THUNDERPANTS were go! All products are proudly NZ made. Wear with pride. (Available for both Men & Women).

WarleyByrd Creations
My passion for conserving resources and recycling materials was instilled in me by my mom at a very young age (Thanks mom!). I repurpose material from wallpaper and black & white photos to wrapping paper and old postcards to offer unique earrings for all ages. I have turned my life long hobby into an ever growing trend of fun, funky, individually sculpted wearable artwork. Based in SE Portland, custom earrings available, all you have to supply is the image!
Whimsical Expressions
One day while putting an outfit together I struggled to find a unique accessory that would become the focal point of my outfit. I dug through some drawers and saw a large box of buttons and a few plain headbands. I grabbed some glue and started to assemble very unique accessories that blended beautifully with my wardrobe. While out on the town I was repeatedly stopped and asked about where they could by my headbands. After a few weeks of questioning and requests I decided to go into business. Whimsical Expressions Hair Accessories is all about individuality, self expression and style. Each accessory is hand assembled with selected materials such as feathers, ribbons, fabrics, flowers, buttons, jewelry components, etc.
Jesse Utt Studied graphic design at Drexel University but knew all along he really just wanted to paint. Somewhere along the way he learned that he had a natural talent for making jewelry and now its what occupies most of his days. With his Zachary Pryor accessory line he has found success in several major cities across the states and has enjoyed patronage from such celebrities as Kanye West, Brad Pitt, Mary Kate Olsen, Elizabeth Shue, Sara Evans and Taylor Swift. His work has been featured in the pages of Maxim, Time Out New York, San Diego City Beat, The San Francisco Guardian and Lucky magazine. Though it is hard to define his work, Jesse would say that his pieces are most often inspired by his closest friends around him and their personal style. This Spring the Zachary Pryor line is looking very complex, with mixed metals, found objects, precious beads and vintage finds. Jesse Utt the painter is hard at work now on a series delving into the darkness that lies in us all, while also displaying the humor that can be used to deal with that darkness. His style is sort of pop meets impressionistic, a subversive translation of a contemporary culturet. When he isn’t focusing on this theme, he spends his time painting adorable and hilarious little cartoon animals…just to keep it light. Jesse Utt’s work has been shown at Redux in Portland, Sugarcube in Philadelphia, Han Cholo, 50/50 Grind and Elizabeth Paige Smith in Los Angeles, Voice 1156 in San Diego and Niagara in New York.

Aaron Trotter
www . aarontrotter . com
Agapantha Jewelry
www . agapanthanyc . com
Alchemy Goods
www . alchemygoods . com
Alternate Greetings
www . alternategreetings . com

Everything is designed and produced in charming Portland, Oregon. Always mindful of using socially and environmentally responsible methods and fabrics, Amelia clothing is the kind of little luxury you can feel good about purchasing, wearing, and making memories in.

Aster Park
www . asterpark . com
Old and discarded becomes fun, new, interesting, and beautiful.
betsy & iya
www . betsyandiya . com

DUST
www . dustcantkillme .
Interesting is the goal, not perfection.

fiveleft leather
www . fiveleft . ca
fiveleft leather goods marry sleek modernism with rugged saddlery tradition.
The image is laser cut onto the wood and the burn depth of the laser creates the darkness of the image.

idle hands designs
www . idlehandsdesigns . com

Jene DeSpain
www . jenedespain . com
Jennifer Glasgow Designs
www . jenniferglasgowdesign . com

Qi Cashmere
www . qinewyork . com

Sword + Fern
www . swordandfern . com

Zachary Pryor Accessories
www . zp-nyc . com
